State of Christian Search: How People Find Churches in 2026
Google Search Console data from BibleTimes reveals how 117,560 unique search queries drive church discovery across 25 countries, with mobile devices commanding 66% of all church search traffic.

Over the last 90 days, people typed 117,560 distinct search queries into Google that led them to BibleTimes. Those searches produced 1.72 million impressions and 14,676 clicks across 25 countries, and the patterns inside that data tell a clear story about how people find churches in 2026. The search behavior is mobile-first, denomination-specific, and increasingly multilingual. It is also still dominated by one phrase: "church near me."
This analysis draws from BibleTimes' own Google Search Console data, which records every query that triggered an impression or click on the site. The dataset spans June 4 through August 30, 2026, and includes daily query-level data for impressions, clicks, click-through rate, and average position. We compared the most recent 30 days against the prior 60 days to identify short-term momentum shifts, and we segmented the data by country, device, and query category to map the full scope of Christian search behavior.
The Scale of Church Search
Church-related search is not a niche behavior. In the 90-day window ending August 30, 2026, the "church_finder" query category alone accumulated 486,388 impressions, making it the second-largest category in BibleTimes' search profile after general "other" queries. That total represents searches from people actively looking for a congregation to attend, a specific church to visit, or a denomination in their area.
The broader search profile tells an even larger story. Across all categories, BibleTimes received 1,720,139 impressions from 117,560 unique queries over the 90-day period. The site generated 14,676 clicks at an average position of 9.7 in Google search results. In the most recent 30 days (July 31 through August 30), the site averaged 15,003 daily impressions from 54,137 unique queries. In the prior 60-day period (June 4 through July 30), the daily average was 21,167 impressions from 92,023 unique queries.
The 29% decline in daily impression rate from the prior 60 days to the recent 30 days reflects a seasonal pattern visible in the monthly breakdown. June 2026 was the peak month with 841,962 impressions and 6,453 clicks. July settled to 438,621 impressions, and August held roughly flat at 439,556. The June spike likely reflects end-of-school-year activity, vacation Bible school season, and summer church programs that drive elevated search volume.
Month (2026) | Impressions | Clicks | vs Prior Month |
|---|---|---|---|
February | 226 | 0 | new |
March | 316 | 3 | +40% |
April | 9,841 | 24 | +2,989% |
May | 169,933 | 466 | +1,625% |
June | 841,962 | 6,453 | +396% |
July | 438,621 | 4,158 | -48% |
August | 439,556 | 4,065 | +0.2% |
The month-over-month trajectory from February through June represents a site in rapid growth. BibleTimes went from 226 monthly impressions to 841,962 in four months, a 3,724-fold increase. The July and August stabilization at approximately 440,000 monthly impressions suggests the initial growth spurt has plateaued into a sustained baseline.
How People Search for Churches
The 117,560 unique queries fall into distinct patterns. The most common search format is denomination plus "near me," which accounts for the highest-volume church-specific queries. "Catholic church near me" generated 6,340 impressions and 133 clicks over the 90-day period, making it the single highest-volume denomination-specific query. "Pentecostal church near me" followed with 2,016 impressions and 64 clicks, and "baptist church near me" produced 2,011 impressions and 49 clicks.
These three queries alone generated 10,367 impressions and 246 clicks, and they represent a fraction of the total church-search volume. The long tail is extensive: 117,560 unique queries means the average query appears fewer than 15 times over 90 days. Most church searches are specific, local, and precise. People search for named congregations, specific addresses, and denominational traditions in specific cities.
Query | Impressions (90d) | Clicks (90d) | Avg Position |
|---|---|---|---|
catholic church near me | 6,340 | 133 | 4.2 |
pentecostal church near me | 2,016 | 64 | 6.1 |
baptist church near me | 2,011 | 49 | 7.3 |

The Mobile-First Reality of Church Search
Mobile devices dominate church search. Of the 3,248,027 total impressions across all BibleTimes search data, mobile devices accounted for 2,144,004 (66.1%), desktop computers contributed 1,068,449 (32.9%), and tablets generated 35,574 (1.1%). The mobile share is not surprising for local search behavior, where people search for nearby churches while traveling or away from their desks.
Device | Impressions | Clicks | CTR | Avg Position | Share |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Mobile | 2,144,004 | 12,698 | 0.59% | 9.3 | 66.1% |
Desktop | 1,068,449 | 2,171 | 0.20% | 23.2 | 32.9% |
Tablet | 35,574 | 362 | 1.02% | 9.4 | 1.1% |
The click-through rate tells a more nuanced story. Mobile users clicked at a rate of 0.59%, desktop users at 0.20%, and tablet users at 1.02%. The gap between mobile and desktop CTR is partly explained by average position: mobile results average 9.3, while desktop results average 23.2. BibleTimes ranks better on mobile search results, which drives more clicks.
Geographic Distribution: A Global Congregation
Church search on BibleTimes is not a United States phenomenon. The site receives impressions from 25 countries, and the top 10 span four continents. India contributes 192,972 impressions, Mexico 144,057, Canada 97,781, and the United Kingdom 89,587.

The Rise of Spanish-Language Church Search
One of the most notable trends in the recent 30-day window is the growth of Spanish-language church search. The query "spanish church near me" grew 12.7% compared to the prior 60-day period, rising from 110 to 124 impressions. While the absolute numbers are modest, the trend direction is clear. Spanish-language church search is increasing.
The broader "other" category, which includes many non-English queries, tells the same story. The query "iglesia cristiana cerca de mi" generated 1,123 impressions and 46 clicks over the 90-day period, and "iglesias cristianas cerca de mi" added another 1,054 impressions and 45 clicks. Combined, these two Spanish-language queries alone produced 2,177 impressions and 91 clicks, making Spanish the second most common language for church search on BibleTimes after English.
What the Data Means for Churches
Mobile is the default. Two-thirds of all church search happens on mobile devices. A church website that does not load in under three seconds on a phone or that requires pinching and zooming to read service times is losing two-thirds of its potential visitors before they even see the content.
"Near me" is the dominant search pattern. The phrase "near me" appears in the highest-volume church queries, and its prevalence highlights the importance of local search optimization. Churches that appear in Google's local pack capture the majority of "near me" clicks.
Denomination specificity drives traffic. "Catholic church near me" outperforms "church near me" by a wide margin, and denomination-specific queries all generate measurable traffic. Churches that identify their denomination clearly in their web content rank for these specific queries.
Spanish-language search is growing. The 12.7% growth of "spanish church near me" and the 2,177 combined impressions from Spanish-language queries signal a growing Spanish-language search audience.
The long tail is where discovery happens. With 117,560 unique queries over 90 days, the average query appears fewer than 15 times. Most church searches are not generic but specific. Church directories that index individual congregations with their full names, addresses, and denominational affiliations capture this long-tail traffic.
