Saint Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church is an Orthodox Christian parish of East Slavic tradition serving Newcastle and the Hunter Valley. The parish includes Orthodox Christians of Belarussian, Ukrainian, Russian, Macedonian, and other backgrounds. It is part of the Australian and New Zealand Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia. The parish is doctrinally Orthodox and liturgically traditional, welcoming to all visitors. Services use English and Church Slavonic, the liturgical language of Slavic peoples. Established in 1952, it is the oldest continuously functioning Orthodox parish in the Hunter Valley and one of the oldest in its Diocese. The parish priest, Archpriest James Carles, serves voluntarily and also serves other Orthodox communities on the Central Coast and Mid North Coast.
