St Mary's Cathedral

Sydney, New South Wales

St Mary's Cathedral is located in Sydney, New South Wales and stands on the site of the first Catholic Chapel in Australia. The Cathedral is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, under the title of Immaculate Mother of God, Help of Christians. The building was designed by architect William Wilkinson Wardell, who was commissioned by Archbishop Polding to create a new St Mary's following a fire in 1865 that destroyed the original Cathedral. The Cathedral maintains daily sung services and is home to the Choir of St Mary's Cathedral, which is Australia's oldest musical institution with a history spanning over 200 years. It is the only choir in Australia with a dedicated Choir School offering fully paid scholarships to choristers. Major upgrade works are scheduled to commence in March 2027.
