Salvador, Bahia
Igreja e Mosteiro de São Bento is a Benedictine monastery and basilica located in Salvador, Bahia, situated on a hilltop outside the walls of the original city. The complex includes the Basilica Arquiabacial de São Sebastião and the Monastery, built over more than four centuries. The basilica originated from a small chapel constructed by the Jesuits shortly after the city's foundation in 1549, erected on the site of a former indigenous village. The architectural ensemble possesses notable historical and architectural merit, reflecting all the architectural trends of its era. The monastery maintains a collection of over 5,000 pieces of great historical value accumulated over 400 years, including sacred works, oil paintings, porcelain and crystal pieces, sculptures, and furnishings from the 17th to 19th centuries, with works by renowned artists such as Frei Agostinho da Piedade and José Joaquim da Rocha, founder of the Baiana School of Painting.
