St. Gregorios Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church

St. Gregorios Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church in Edmonton, Alberta is a parish of the Malankara Orthodox Church, one of the world's most ancient churches founded by St. Thomas the Apostle around AD 52 in Kerala, India. The Edmonton congregation began as a prayer group in 1973 with a few families and grew to over 100 paying member families. The current church building was purchased in 1987 and modified for Orthodox worship. Divine Liturgy on Sundays is conducted primarily in Malayalam, the vernacular of Kerala, with Sunday School and women's league meetings held regularly in the basement. The church maintains Sacramental and Eucharistic partnership with other Oriental Orthodox churches including Coptic, Armenian, Ethiopian, and Syrian traditions, and is a member of the World Council of Churches.
