St. George's Greek Orthodox Church of Toronto

Toronto, Ontario

St. George's Greek Orthodox Church of Toronto is the oldest Greek Orthodox community in Canada, founded in 1909 by early Greek immigrant pioneers. Located in downtown Toronto at 115 Bond Street, the church occupies a building originally constructed in 1897 as a synagogue and acquired by the parish in 1937. The church interior is uniquely painted entirely by master iconographers Theophilos and Chrysostomos from Mount Athos, Greece, making it the only church outside Greece with this distinction. Services are offered in both Liturgical Greek and English, chanted in authentic Byzantine mode. The church serves as both a sacred space and visual museum of late-Byzantine art, featuring exceptional frescoed interiors and iconography. Renovations undertaken from 1981 to 1987 enhanced the Byzantine aesthetic while preserving the Romanesque facade. As the 'mother church' of the Greek diaspora in Canada, it holds significant historical prominence and was designated a City of Toronto Heritage landmark.
