St Joseph's Catholic Church

Manchester, England

St Joseph's and Holy Family Catholic Churches serve the parish in Sale, Manchester. The parish began 150 years ago in 1860 with Mass said in a private house. A school-chapel dedicated to St. Joseph was built in 1866 on Hope Road. The main church was designed by architects Heathcote and Rawle, with its foundation stone laid by the Bishop of Shrewsbury in May 1884 and opening in May 1885. Built in Accrington brick in Romanesque-early gothic style, the church was extended in 1930 with a sanctuary, side-chapels and additional rooms. A baptistry was added in 1922 to commemorate parish members killed in World War One. The parish also operates a school, originally built in 1899.
