St Peter's Cathedral, Belfast

Belfast, Northern Ireland

St Peter's Cathedral is a historic Catholic cathedral in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Built of Scrabo stone with features of Caen stone and Irish marble, it was the first Gothic-style Catholic church constructed in Belfast. The cathedral features two great towers, five doorways, two porch entrances, and a sculpture depicting the liberation of St Peter from prison. Its commanding position made it a conspicuous landmark on the southern and western approaches to the city. The cathedral opened on 14 October 1866 and has over 150 years of worship history. It played a significant role in the total abstinence movement and served as a symbol of hope in troubled times. The church was built to accommodate the growing Catholic population of Belfast in the 19th century.
