Ascension Church in Chennai, Tamil Nadu is part of the Southern Indian Province of the Congregation of the Mission, a society of apostolic life founded by Saint Vincent de Paul in Paris on April 17, 1625. The Congregation was approved by Pope Urban VII on January 12, 1633. Members, known as Vincentians, are devoted to following Jesus Christ and evangelizing the poor through pastoral ministries, social work, formation, retreat preaching, and youth ministry. The Congregation's missionary presence in India began in 1922 when Spanish Vincentians arrived in Orissa. The Indian province was divided in December 1997 into the Northern Indian Province and Southern Indian Province, headquartered in Mysore. The Southern Indian Province operates in several Indian states and maintains international missions in Angola, Canada, Germany, Italy, Malawi, Nepal, Spain, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Tanzania, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
