St. Thomas Mount National Shrine Basilica is a historic Catholic church located on a holy hill in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The church was built by the Portuguese in 1523 and dedicated to Our Lady of Expectation. The shrine marks the site where St. Thomas the Apostle was martyred in 72 AD, with a pedestal constructed in 105 AD on the same location. The basilica was proclaimed a National Shrine on January 8, 2010. It has maintained uninterrupted liturgical celebrations for 500 years and recently completed its Quincentennial celebrations. The shrine serves as a significant pilgrimage destination attracting visitors from local and international locations.
