St Mathias Anglican church

St Mathias Anglican Church is located in Onitsha, Anambra. It is part of the Diocese on the Niger, which traces its origins to Niger expeditions beginning in 1830. The first church service in Igbo land was held on Monday, 27 July 1857 at the palace of King Obi Akazua of Onitsha, attended by approximately 600 persons including the King and his council. This service marked the beginning of Church Missionary Society mission and evangelization in Igbo land. Samuel Ajayi Crowther, an ordained former slave, played a prominent role in the Niger mission. The Diocese is referred to as the Mother and Nurse of many Infant Sees and Teacher of doctrine. The church structure includes multiple archdeaconries covering surrounding areas and communities.
