First Baptist Church

First Baptist Church is a historic Baptist congregation located on North Ripley Street in Montgomery, Alabama. Founded in downtown Montgomery in 1867, it was established as one of the first black churches in the area. During its early decades, the church grew significantly from hundreds to thousands of parishioners, becoming one of the largest black churches in the South. In the 1950s and 1960s, First Baptist Church served as an important gathering place for civil rights activities, becoming notably associated with the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the Freedom Ride of May 1961. The church's historical significance was formally recognized when it was listed by the Alabama Historical Commission on the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage on May 5, 2000.
