Mission Santa Barbara, known as the 'Queen of the Missions', was founded in 1786 and represents a significant example of Spanish colonial architecture and history in California. The mission grounds occupy a scenic location between the Pacific Ocean and the Santa Ynez Mountains. As one of only two California missions to remain under Franciscan leadership since its founding, it offers insight into the religious and colonial history of Alta California.
