First Congregational Church

Detroit, Michigan

First Congregational Church of Detroit is a historic Romanesque and Byzantine structure located at 33 E. Forest at Woodward in Detroit, Michigan. Established on December 25, 1844, the church moved to its present site in 1891. The building was designed by architect John Faxon of Boston and features grand ornamentation including carved wood, ceiling portraits of the four evangelists, and rose windows patterned after churches in Venice and Ravenna. The sanctuary organ, built by Casavant Freres of St. Hyacinthe, Quebec, is one of the largest and finest instruments of its kind. The church includes a chapel completed in 1890, a 120-foot campanile topped with a copper figure of the Archangel Uriel, and the Angels' Wing Community House designed by architect Albert Kahn. The congregation is multicultural and committed to diverse outreach ministries and preservation of the historic structure.
