Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Minneapolis, Minnesota

Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is part of a three-parish Catholic collaboration in Richfield, Minnesota, comprising Assumption, St. Peter, and St. Richard parishes. Founded in 1874 by German Catholic settlers, Assumption began as a small mission church on the Richfield-Bloomington border. After lightning destroyed the first chapel, a new church was built and dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Assumption in 1886. The parish grew under the guidance of Benedictine and Oblate priests and developed into a diverse, welcoming community. Education has been central to Assumption's mission, with the parish school expanding from a basement classroom to serving over 1,000 students at its peak. In 1994, Assumption joined St. Richard and St. Peter to establish Blessed Trinity Catholic School. In 2020, the three parishes unified under shared administration with Father James Liekhus as pastor.
