Sacred Heart Cathedral

Rochester, New York

Sacred Heart Cathedral in Rochester, New York is the official cathedral church of the Diocese of Rochester. The current neo-gothic structure was completed in 1927 and features impressive architectural details including 16 angel statues atop ceiling trusses and over 100 angel figures throughout the building. The cathedral was originally a regular parish church established in 1910 to serve recent immigrants from Ireland, Italy, and Germany in northwest Rochester. It served as a pro-cathedral from 1937 until Pope Pius XII officially constituted it the cathedral church in 1952. The building underwent significant interior redecoration in the 1950s, including installation of a new marble high altar and bronze altarpiece of the Sacred Heart in 1957, followed by the formal consecration of the building in 1961.
