The Roman Catholic Diocese of Charlotte was founded in 1972 and encompasses 46 counties in the western half of North Carolina, bordering Virginia, Tennessee, Georgia, and South Carolina. The diocese serves more than 565,000 Catholics across 93 parishes and missions. It operates 20 schools and more than 50 ministries and programs including food banks, counseling, prison ministry, youth and elder ministry, campus ministry, anti-poverty efforts, refugee resettlement, and pro-life advocacy. The diocese is led by Bishop Michael Martin. It welcomes diversity and peoples of various rites and languages, offering regular Masses in English, Spanish, Vietnamese, Korean, and Hmong, with periodic Masses in Igbo and Polish. The diocese also embraces several Eastern Catholic Churches in communion with the pope, including Ukrainian Greek, Syro-Malabar, Maronite, and Ethiopian/Eritrean Catholic Churches.
