St. Ignatius of Antioch Orthodox Church

St. Ignatius of Antioch Orthodox Church is a Syriac Orthodox parish located in Southeast Portland, Oregon near Reed College. The church is part of the Syriac Orthodox Church of Antioch, headed by Patriarch Ignatius Aphrem II in Damascus, Syria. As of 2014, the parish has 100 member families with approximately 150 parishioners attending major feast days and 70 on typical Sundays. The parish is led by Fr. George Albanna, ordained in 1994, along with Deacon Matti Totonchy and fifteen sub-deacons. The congregation has experienced significant demographic changes since 2010, with an influx of Iraqi and Syrian refugee families. Liturgies are conducted in Syriac, Arabic, and English to accommodate both long-established English-speaking members and newer Arabic-speaking immigrants. The parish offers youth and adult education programs, including Sunday School, youth bible groups, and monthly family nights led by Fr. George covering scripture and church history.
