Stella Maris Catholic Church

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Stella Maris Catholic Church is located at 2901 S. 10th Street in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The parish was founded on February 11, 1954, during the Marian Year declared by Pope Pius XII. Archbishop John F. O'Hara established the parish to serve the growing population in South Philadelphia following World War II, as the neighboring Epiphany of Our Lord Parish could not accommodate all residents and schoolchildren. The church site occupies 2.6 acres at the southeast corner of 10th and Bigler Streets. The name Stella Maris, meaning Star of the Sea in Latin, was selected by Archbishop O'Hara because the parish contains the U.S. Naval Base within its boundaries and is bordered by the Delaware River. The parish is under the pastoral leadership of Rev. John DiOrio.
