Holy Virgin Russian Orthodox Church
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Holy Virgin Russian Orthodox Church is located in Carnegie, Pennsylvania and is part of the Archdiocese of Western Pennsylvania within the Orthodox Church in America. The parish was organized in 1909 under the leadership of Fr Peter Kockanik with Fr Basil Popoff as the first pastor. The church was established by founders from the Ukrainian parish of SS Peter and Paul who sought to preserve the Orthodox Faith of their ancestors. The original ethnic composition included Russian, Carpatho-Russian, and Ukrainian members. The current church structure was built in 1920, replacing an earlier house church. The parish has undergone renovations, including updates to the iconostasis and altar tables in the 1970s and further improvements in the mid-1990s. The church maintains a parish cemetery with a perpetual care fund and operates under the rectorship of V. Rev. George York.
