St Paul of the Cross Monastery

St. Paul of the Cross Monastery is a Passionist community located at 148 Monastery Avenue in Pittsburgh's historic South Side neighborhood. Founded in 1852 by four Passionists from Italy at the request of the first Bishop of Pittsburgh, the monastery was built on a ridge overlooking the confluence of the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers. The cornerstone was laid in 1853 and the facility opened in 1854. The monastery operates a retreat center offering various retreats for men, women, and families, along with day events. The community serves through daily liturgy, sacrament of reconciliation, preaching, spiritual direction, counseling, and community outreach programs. A perpetual novena in honor of Passionist saints has been held since 1925.
