1 Timothy 6:11–16

1 Timothy 6:11–16

Today's passage

Today's passage is 1 Timothy 6:11–16, which instructs believers to pursue virtues and uphold their faith in anticipation of Christ's return.

11But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness. 12Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses. 13I give thee charge in the sight of God, who quickeneth all things, and Christ Jesus, who before Pontius Pilate witnessed a good confession; 14That thou keep commandment without spot, unrebukeable, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ: 15Which in his times he shall shew, the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords; 16Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom honour and power everlasting. Amen.

1 Timothy 6:11–16 is a passage from a letter written by Paul the Apostle to Timothy, a young leader in the early Christian church. This letter is part of the New Testament and provides guidance and encouragement for Timothy's pastoral duties. In this passage, Paul instructs Timothy to avoid sinful behaviors and instead pursue virtues such as righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, and meekness. Paul urges Timothy to "fight the good fight of faith" and to "lay hold on eternal life" (1 Timothy 6:12 KJV). He emphasizes the importance of maintaining a good confession before many witnesses and staying true to one's calling until the return of Jesus Christ.

The passage delves deeper into the nature of Christian leadership and perseverance. It juxtaposes the temporary nature of earthly struggles with the eternal significance of holding onto faith. The text does not promise an easy life but calls for steadfastness in the face of challenges. Paul highlights the ultimate authority and immortality of Christ as the motivation for such perseverance, referring to Christ as the "only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords" (1 Timothy 6:15 KJV). The emphasis is on the enduring nature of faith and the ultimate accountability before God, who "quickeneth all things" (1 Timothy 6:13 KJV), and Christ, who exemplified integrity even before Pontius Pilate.
