Before Abraham was, I am

John 8:52–59

52Now we know that thou hast a devil. Abraham is dead... and thou sayest, If a man keep my saying, he shall never taste of death. 53Art thou greater than our father Abraham, which is dead? 54Jesus answered, If I honour myself, my honour is nothing: it is my Father that honoureth me... 55...if I should say, I know him not, I shall be a liar like unto you: but I know him, and keep his saying. 57Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham? 58Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am. 59Then took they up stones to cast at him: but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by.

Today's passage comes from the Gospel of John. In this scene, Jesus is in Jerusalem during the Feast of Tabernacles, teaching in the temple treasury courts. He has just told the crowd that anyone who keeps his word will never taste death (verse 51). The religious authorities respond by accusing him of demon possession. The confrontation escalates until the crowd picks up stones and Jesus slips out of the temple.

The authorities press him on what he means: are you saying that you and your followers will never taste death? Are you greater than Abraham, who is dead? Jesus says the Father glorifies him, and that Abraham rejoiced to see his day. When they challenge that he is not yet fifty years old and could not have seen Abraham, Jesus answers: Before Abraham was, I am.
