1 Samuel 17:45

1 Samuel 17:45

Today's verse comes from the Book of 1 Samuel. An armored giant has taunted Israel's army for forty days. An unarmed shepherd boy confronts him, armed only with God's name.

45 Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied.

Goliath stalks forward, bronze armor gleaming, spear thick as a weaver's beam. Behind him stands the Philistine war machine. Behind David stands a paralyzed Israeli army that has endured forty days of mockery. King Saul hides in his tent. The giant sneers at the boy who carries only a staff and a sling. He curses David by his gods and demands his flesh. David plants his feet in the Valley of Elah and refuses to flinch. He stares up at the towering champion and makes his stand.
