Today's verse comes from the Book of Leviticus. A priest bakes twelve loaves and stacks them on a gold table inside the sanctuary. Frankincense burns atop each row as the bread stays before the Lord every Sabbath.
A priest measures fine flour and kneads the dough. He shapes twelve cakes and bakes them until golden. He carries the loaves through the tabernacle courtyard and steps into the sanctuary. A gold plated table waits there, overlaid with pure gold. He sets the bread in two rows, six loaves per stack, on the polished surface. He scoops pure frankincense and piles it beside each row. The fragrance rises through the tent. Every seventh day he returns, lifts the old loaves from the table, and lays fresh ones in their place. The stale bread goes to the priests, who eat it inside the holy walls.
Leviticus 24 commands the baking of the twelve loaves on the gold table. 1 Samuel 21 records when David flees Saul and enters the tabernacle at Nob. He has no food. The priest gives him the consecrated bread just removed from the table. 1 Chronicles 9 assigns Levites the duty of preparing the loaves each Sabbath. 2 Chronicles 2 has Solomon order the bread for the temple he builds. Matthew 12 recalls David eating the sacred loaves when Jesus defends his disciples for plucking grain on the Sabbath day.
