Chapters
Jonah 1
Jonah is commanded by God to go to Nineveh and warn them of impending judgment, but he tries to flee instead. A storm arises on the sea, and the sailors are afraid, eventually casting Jonah overboard to calm the storm. Jonah is swallowed by a great fish and remains in its belly for three days.
Jonah 2
Jonah prays to God from inside the fish's belly, recalling his affliction and God's deliverance. He remembers God's temple and vows to sacrifice with thanksgiving. The chapter concludes with God speaking to the fish, which vomits out Jonah onto dry land.
Jonah 3
God commands Jonah to preach repentance to Nineveh for a second time. Jonah obeys, proclaiming judgment in 40 days unless they change their ways. The people of Nineveh believe God's warning and turn from their evil behavior.
Jonah 4
Jonah becomes angry when God spares the city of Nineveh, which he had previously prophesied would be destroyed. God then tests Jonah's compassion by causing a worm to destroy a gourd that provided him shade. Jonah is relieved when the gourd returns and then devastated when it withers again.
