Today's verse comes from the Book of Exodus. Pharaoh's six hundred chariots pin two million Israelites against the Red Sea. The people Moses just led out of slavery beg to go back, and Moses invokes the LORD by name.
Pharaoh changed his mind. Six hundred chariots thunder across the desert floor, bearing down on the freed slaves he let go. Two million Israelites press against the edge of the Red Sea with nowhere to run. Panic spreads through the camp. The people turn on Moses and accuse him of dragging them into the wilderness to die. They say it would have been better to stay slaves in Egypt than to die free. Moses stands between a faithless people who want to return to bondage and an empire that does not fear God. He raises his voice above the crowd and invokes the name of YHWH. He commands them to stop, stand, and watch the salvation of the LORD.
Moses stakes every life in that camp, and his own, on a single claim: the LORD will fight for you. He does not negotiate with Pharaoh. He does not appease the people who want to go back. He calls on the might of God in front of both audiences and says, watch. If God does not act, Moses dies and Israel is wiped out. God acts. The sea splits, the Egyptian army drowns, and the people walk through on dry ground. The declaration establishes the pattern of the Old Testament: the servants of God invoke His name before the faithless and the enemy, and God answers.
