Today's verse comes from the Book of 2 Samuel. David has just won the battle that ended his son's violent rebellion. David retreats to a chamber and weeps, wishing he had died instead.
The runner reaches the gate with news from the forest of Ephraim. The rebellion is crushed. Absalom's forces are scattered and broken. But the messenger carries a heavier burden than victory. Absalom is dead, killed against David's explicit orders to deal gently with the young man. The king turns from the crowd and climbs the stairs to the chamber over the gate. He shuts the door behind him and the weeping begins, loud and uncontrolled. This is not a monarch savoring his triumph. This is a father hearing that his boy is gone.
David's cry strips away every layer of royalty and the throne, the kingdom, the victory, none of it matters now. He would trade it all, even his own life, to bring Absalom back. His grief paralyzes the very army that just saved his crown. Soldiers return from battle expecting celebration but find their king shattered. David has won the war and lost everything that mattered.
