Jacob huddles alone beside the Jabbok river. Hours earlier, he sent his family and all his possessions across the water. He fears meeting Esau, the brother he cheated decades before. Now a mysterious man seizes him in the shadows. They grapple through the night, bodies straining in the dirt. As dawn approaches, the man touches Jacob's hip and wrenches it out of joint. He demands release, but Jacob clings to him through the pain, refusing to yield.
Jacob holds on with a dislocated hip. He believes this opponent holds the blessing he needs. God honors that grip. Jacob walks away limping but renamed Israel, the father of a nation. Hosea later recalls this night, noting how Jacob wept and made supplication as he wrestled with the angel and prevailed.
