1 Samuel 16:13

1 Samuel 16:13

Today's verse comes from the Book of 1 Samuel. A prophet stands before a family to challenge a reigning king. He pours oil from an animal horn onto a young shepherd, marking him king.

13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.

Samuel stands in the house of Jesse at Bethlehem. He raises a curved animal horn filled with olive oil. He tilts the horn over the head of the youngest son, David. Thick oil runs down the young shepherd's hair and onto his beard. The brothers watch in silence. No crown presses onto the boy's head, no throne waits for him. The poured oil marks him. The horn itself serves as the vessel that carries the authority of the anointing. Samuel empties the oil, turns, and leaves the house.
