Ruth 1:16

Ruth 1:16

Today's verse comes from the Book of Ruth. A widow urges her daughters-in-law to return to their mothers in Moab. Ruth refuses to leave Naomi, pledging loyalty to her people and her God.

16And Ruth said, Intreat me not to leave thee, to return from following after thee: for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people my people, and thy God my God:

Naomi turns toward the road to Bethlehem and delivers a brutal order. Go home. She has nothing left to offer. Her husband and both sons lie buried in Moabite soil, and she will not drag two young widows into a life of poverty in a foreign land. Orpah kisses her mother-in-law goodbye and walks away. Ruth does not move. She grabs hold of Naomi and refuses to let go. Naomi pushes harder, but Ruth digs in. She speaks, and what she says cuts off every escape route back to safety.
