Leviticus 16:8-10

Leviticus 16:8-10

Today's verse comes from the Book of Leviticus. A high priest stands before two goats at the tabernacle entrance. He casts lots to send one goat alive into the wilderness carrying the nation's sins.

8 And Aaron shall cast lots upon the two goats; one lot for the LORD, and the other lot for the scapegoat. 9 And Aaron shall bring the goat upon which the LORD’S lot fell, and offer him for a sin offering. 10 But the goat, on which the lot fell to be the scapegoat, shall be presented alive before the LORD, to make an atonement with him, and to let him go for a scapegoat into the wilderness.

Aaron stands at the tabernacle entrance with two goats. He casts lots using two marked stones. One stone bears the name of the Lord. The other stone bears the name of Azazel. The goat marked for the Lord faces the altar. The goat marked for Azazel faces the desert. Aaron presses his hands onto the living goat's head. This transfers every sin of Israel onto its body. A man leads the goat out through the camp gates. He releases it into the wilderness. The goat wanders away and never returns. The people watch it disappear over the horizon. Their sins go with it. The camp stays clean for another year.
