What this produces in the target is not chaos but a seamless alternative coherence: the mad person does not experience themselves as confused, because confusion requires a reference point that has been eliminated. The consequence is that madness of this kind is self-sealing - there is no internal leverage point from which the person can recognize the distortion, and external correction becomes, from within the altered state, further evidence of the distortion.

The power to cause men to think themselves to be what they are not is a more precise and more radical capacity than the first, and it is worth distinguishing it carefully. This is not delusion in the clinical sense of a false belief added to an otherwise intact self. The operative mechanism is identity replacement: the entire felt sense of who one is - one's history, one's relationships, one's place in any structure of meaning - is reconstituted around a false premise. The person does not believe the false identity the way one believes a fact; they inhabit it the way one inhabits a body. What this produces in those around the target is a distinctive and terrible recognition: the person they knew is gone, replaced by someone who has all the outward continuity of the original but none of the interior connection. The social consequence is that the replaced person cannot be argued out of their condition, because argument assumes a shared standard of evidence that the replacement has dissolved.

The initial monstrous form is the spirit's natural operational state: undifferentiated, overwhelming, not yet indexed to human categories. It is what the power looks like before it is organized around a specific human target. The transition to human shape occurs under condition of proper address, meaning when the operator has imposed sufficient formal structure on the encounter to constrain the spirit's expression. Human shape is not a lesser form; it is the form of precise application. The monstrous form scatters - it produces madness in the diffuse, ambient sense. The human form concentrates - it produces the specific substitution of one identity for another. The two appearances thus map directly onto the two powers, in that order.

Ose's derived sign is Virgo, produced by the combination of Mutable modality and Earth element. The Earth element follows from Diffuse expression operating on an Individual target: there is no declared act, no moment of confrontation, no point at which the target can locate the intervention - the force works through accumulation, through the slow revision of the interpretive apparatus itself, grain by grain, until the instrument reads differently without ever having been visibly touched. The Mutable modality then describes the temporal posture of this force: it reads the existing terrain and moves through it. Ose does not break the self open from outside (Cardinal) or hold an imposed state in place by force (Fixed); he finds the existing architecture of a person's identity, reads how it coheres, and translates it into a new coherence that the person cannot distinguish from the original. The madness he produces is not disarray but seamless re-calibration - the interpretive faculty still runs, it has simply been re-read into alignment with a different premise. The Virgo operator, as this combination specifies, is not a disruptor or a keeper but an analyst of structure who works through the structure's own logic, making the substitution legible only to observers outside the altered system, never to the one inside it.
