The Moose Lodge

The Moose Lodge operates its own self-contained city for children in need, complete with schools and homes on over 1,000 acres in Illinois, rather than simply running a charity fund. The organization began in 1888 as the Loyal Order of Moose, a fraternal and service order founded during an era when groups like the Freemasons, Odd Fellows, and Elks dominated American fraternal life. The Moose set themselves apart by building actual residential communities rather than just passing around collection plates.

The fraternity established Mooseheart Child City & School on 1,023 acres roughly 40 miles west of Chicago. The campus serves children and teens who have lost one or both parents or face serious family instability. Students live in actual homes, attend on-site schools, and participate in sports and recreational programs run by the organization. The fraternity later added a second flagship operation: Moosehaven, a 63-acre retirement community near Jacksonville, Florida, built specifically to care for aging Moose members. Local chapters, known as Moose Family Centers or Activity Centers, fund these operations through dues and fundraising across 44 state and provincial associations in North America.

The organization now operates under the umbrella of Moose International, with a Loyal Order of Moose also active in Britain. Local lodges continue to host community and recreational programs, but Mooseheart remains the defining project: a working city for children that has housed and educated thousands of kids since its founding.
