Moses stands at the base of Mount Sinai holding the stone tablets that God Himself inscribed with His law. Below him, the Israelites dance around a golden calf and shout and sing to it as their god. God burns with anger and tells Moses He will destroy the whole nation and start over with him alone. The offer is huge because Moses could walk away clean and lead a brand new people. But Moses refuses the offer and falls before God and begs Him to forgive the people. Then he raises the stakes higher than anyone expects.
Moses risks his own salvation for a rebellious people and tells God to erase his name from the book of life if He will not pardon Israel. This is not negotiation but an ultimatum born from love. The apostle Paul echoes this same cry in Romans 9:3, saying he could wish himself cut off from Christ for his people. The boldest declarations flow from those willing to perish so others might live.
