Today's verse comes from the Book of Esther. The Jewish people of Persia face annihilation under a royal decree. Esther, the queen whose Jewish identity is kept secret from the court, makes this declaration as she prepares to enter the king's chamber uninvited.
Esther is queen of Persia under Xerxes I, around 479 BCE. She hides her Jewish identity from the court. Haman, the king's chief minister, has secured a royal decree to kill every Jew in the empire. The only path to intervene is the king himself, but Persian law puts to death anyone who enters his inner court unsummoned, unless he extends his golden scepter. Esther has not been summoned in thirty days. She prepares to face the king, knowing it may cost her life.
Esther understands her situation is dire. Her people face annihilation, and her only hope is to face death herself. To gather the resolve to enter the king's chamber, she calls every Jew in Shushan to fast and pray with her in solidarity. The declaration "If I perish, I perish" shows she has no illusions. She accepts that her only choice is to show courage when facing death with the hope of saving her people.
