The verse pairs two time markers in one sentence. First comes a waiting period of seven days. Then comes a rain period of forty days and forty nights. Together they form a two-stage countdown from warning to destruction. This same pair appears again and again in later Bible stories. Moses fasted forty days on Mount Sinai. Elijah fasted forty days at Horeb. Jonah gave Nineveh a forty-day warning. Jesus fasted forty days in the wilderness. The pattern starts here in Genesis and repeats across the whole Bible.
