Enoch 72:1-37
The book of the courses of the luminaries of heaven, each one as they are, according to their classes, according to their dominion, and according to their seasons, each according to their names and places of origin and according to their months, which Uriel, the holy angel who was with me, who is their leader, showed me; and the whole book of them, as he showed me, and as it is in all the years of the world and unto eternity, until the new creation is made which shall endure forever.
And this is the first law of the luminaries: the sun, the light — its rising is in the gates of heaven which are toward the east, and its setting is in the western gates of heaven.
And I saw six gates from which the sun goes forth, and six gates into which the sun sets; and the moon rises and sets through those gates, and the leaders of the stars together with those whom they lead: six in the east and six in the west of the sun, each one following the other in straight order, and many windows to the right and to the left of those gates.
And first there comes forth the great luminary, whose name is the sun, and his disk is like the disk of heaven, and he is wholly filled with blazing and burning fire.
The chariot on which he ascends the wind blows; and the sun descends from heaven and returns through the north in order to travel to the east, and he is led so that he enters through that gate and gives light upon the face of heaven.
In this manner he goes forth in the first month through the great gate; he goes forth through the one which is the fourth of those six gates which are toward the rising of the sun.
And in that fourth gate, through which the sun goes forth in the first month, there are twelve open windows from which a flame comes forth whenever they are opened at their appointed time.
When the sun rises in the heaven, it goes forth through that fourth gate thirty mornings, and through the fourth gate in the west of heaven it descends straight down.
And in those days the day grows longer day by day, and the night grows shorter night by night, until the thirtieth morning.
And on that day the day becomes longer than the night by twice; and the day amounts precisely to ten parts, and the night amounts to eight parts.
And the sun goes forth from that fourth gate and sets in the fourth, and returns to the fifth gate of the east for thirty mornings, and goes forth from it and sets in the fifth gate.
Then the day becomes longer by two parts, and the day amounts to eleven parts, and the night grows shorter and amounts to seven parts.
And the sun returns to the east and enters the sixth gate, and goes forth and sets in the sixth gate thirty-one mornings, on account of its sign.
And on that day the day becomes longer than the night, and the day becomes twice the night, and the day amounts to twelve parts, and the night grows shorter and amounts to six parts.
And the sun rises so that the day shortens and the night lengthens, and the sun returns to the east and enters the sixth gate, and rises from it and sets for thirty mornings.
And when thirty mornings are completed, the day decreases by exactly one part, and the day amounts to eleven parts and the night to seven parts.
And the sun goes forth from the west, from that sixth gate, and travels to the east and rises in the fifth gate for thirty mornings, and sets in the west again in the fifth gate of the west.
On that day the day decreases by two parts, and the day amounts to ten parts and the night to eight parts.
And the sun goes forth from that fifth gate and sets in the fifth gate of the west, and rises in the fourth gate on account of its sign for thirty-one mornings, and sets in the west.
On that day the day becomes equal with the night and becomes equal, and the night amounts to nine parts and the day to nine parts.
And the sun goes forth from that gate and sets in the west, and returns to the east and goes forth through the third gate for thirty mornings, and sets in the west through the third gate.
And on that day the night lengthens beyond the day for thirty mornings, and the day shortens beyond the day for thirty days, and the night amounts to exactly ten parts and the day to eight parts.
And the sun goes forth from that third gate and sets in the third gate in the west, and returns to the east, and the sun goes forth through the second gate of the east for thirty mornings, and likewise sets through the second gate in the west of heaven.
And on that day the night amounts to eleven parts and the day to seven parts.
And the sun goes forth on that day from that second gate and sets in the west through the second gate, and returns to the east through the first gate for thirty-one mornings, and sets in the west through the first gate.
And on that day the night lengthens and becomes double the day, and the night amounts to exactly twelve parts and the day to six parts.
And the sun completes its stations, and turns back again upon these its stations, and enters through that gate for thirty mornings, and in the west, opposite it, he sets.
And on that day the night decreases in its length by one part — that is one part — and amounts to eleven parts, and the day to seven parts.
And the sun returns and enters the second gate of the east, and returns upon those its stations for thirty mornings, rising and setting.
And on that day the night decreases in its length, and the night amounts to ten parts and the day to eight parts.
And on that day the sun goes forth from that second gate and sets in the west, and returns to the east and rises in the third gate for thirty-one mornings, and sets in the west of heaven.
And on that day the night decreases and amounts to nine parts, and the day amounts to nine parts, and the night becomes equal with the day, and the year amounts to exactly three hundred and sixty-four days.
And the lengthening of the day and the night, and the shortening of the day and the night — by the course of the sun is this distinguished.
Because of it his course lengthens day by day, and grows shorter night by night.
And this is the law and the course of the sun, and his returning — as he returns he returns sixty times and goes forth — that is the great luminary which is forever, which is called the sun unto the ages of ages.
And this is that great luminary which goes forth, which is named according to its appearance, as the Lord commanded.
And thus it goes forth and enters, and does not diminish nor rest, but runs day and night in its chariot; and its light is seven times brighter than that of the moon, yet the measures of the two are equal.
